Jessica Jackley Flannery co-founded Kiva.org, the world’s largest online micro-loan organization, as an innovative way to lift people out of poverty. A dynamic speaker, she has appeared on Oprah alongside Bill Clinton, and the former US President has stated of Kiva, “I think the capacity to expand is infinite.” On Wednesday, November 19th, 2008, Jessica will make her first Canadian public speaking appearance at The Carlu in Toronto. She will share her inspiring personal story to help fight hunger across Ontario. Hosted by CBC’s Evan Solomon, the second annual Thought for Food Gala is the signature fundraising event of the Ontario Association of Food Banks (OAFB). Our challenge is great – over 320,000 Ontarians are forced to turn to food banks each month. Join us for this unique evening as Kiva and the OAFB unite to demonstrate a ground-breaking way for you to help end hunger.
About Kiva: Watch an interview with Jessica about KIVA
Kiva's mission is to connect people through lending for the sake of alleviating poverty. To date, Kiva has loaned over 27 million dollars, connecting 270,000 lenders in more than 70 countries with entrepreneurs in 42 developing countries, through 86 microfinance partners. A loan is made on Kiva.org every 34 seconds.
About Ontario Association of Food Banks (OAFB): HOW YOUR SUPPORT HELPS
The OAFB's mission is to help food banks relieve hunger in Ontario. The OAFB acquires and distributes over seven million pounds of food across Ontario each year. The OAFB also reduces hunger through policies, programs and projects. Please visit our About Us, our Member Food Banks and Research sections of the OAFB website to learn more about our organization and how your support of the Thought For Food Gala will help Jessica and Kiva help the OAFB and food banks in Ontario.
