Direct Energy

In 2009, the OAFB worked with Direct Energy volunteer teams on two gleaning projects, to pick fresh crops which are left on the land once the harvest has completed. In Ontario, it is estimated that over 25 million pounds of food remain on fields each year; this product is normally disposed of or tilled back into the soil.

In 2008, Direct Energy helped the OAFB to launch Esurio, a collaborative, online student-led and peer-reviewed academic journal. Esurio brings students together with a community of influential academic and community advisors before a broad cross-sectoral audience. In this way, Esurio represents a nexus and platform for discussion between the academy, the community, and students interested in issues related to hunger and poverty.
As a journal supporter, Direct Energy also awards honourariums to each issue's contributing student researchers. Please visit the inaugral issue of the journal at www.esurio.ca, which features an invited contribution by Direct Energy CEO Deryk King entitled Energy Poverty Is Poverty.
