Food bank gets $6,000 donation from Sunderland Lions
The Sunderland Lions Club has helped bolster the budget of the Brock Community Food Bank.
Dozens of club members gathered at the food bank location in the village last week to present a donation cheque of $6,000.
"The food bank is something that all members of the Lions support," said Glen Williams, past president of the Lions Club, explaining the strong showing of members for the donation.
Food bank chair Janet Ries said the money will be used to ensure that the shelves are fully stocked in the months to come.
"We're very appreciative of the donation," she said.
"The Sunderland Lions Club has been a huge supporter of the food bank over the years."
The donation came the same week that a report the Ontario Association of Food Banks stated that food bank use across the region has increased by 20 per cent across Ontario.
The study blames growing unemployment and increasing food prices spike in food bank clients across the province. A decline in donations only compounds the dilemma.
While the summer is always a lean time for the local food bank, this year was especially tough.
"We've had to purchase more food than in previous years," Ms Ries said.
“As a result, the cash reserves have been going down fast.”
The organization recently launched a fall donation drive to keep supplies at a premium.
Ms Ries is hoping that the donation from the Lions Club helps encourage more donations from residents across the township.
"Hopefully the donation will increase awareness that the food bank is a very important community resource," she said.
Between 30 and 40 local families use the food bank weekly and Brock Township residents are being asked to donate as many non-perishable food items as they can spare.
Donations can be made at a number of local grocery stores or by visiting the food bank's two locations.
The Beaverton location of the Brock Community Food Bank is open at St. Andrew's United Church each Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The southern location of the food bank is also open behind St. Andrew's United Church in Sunderland each Friday during the same hours.
Donations can be made at those two locations during those times or at a number of local grocery stores.
Monetary donations can be made at either of the locations or by mail: Brock Community Food Bank, P.O. Box 500, Sunderland, Ontario, L0C 1H0.
